Seth Turns 11

Birthday crown made by Catherine

Seth's favorite part of his birthday is getting (almost) unlimited electronics time. He made sure to be up bright and early to take advantage of it.

One advantage of summer birthdays: your friends aren't in school! Jack came over in the afternoon and enjoyed some trampoline time in between electronics:

I'm still loving that Seth is opting out of traditional cakes and going for desserts like raspberry lemon bars on his birthday:
The picture where I threatened him.

What all the other pictures looked like.

Candles out = officially 11 years old!

We ended up opening presents the next day since it was so crazy. He wasn't as excited about the paints we got him for his figurines as I thought he would be. Oh well, you win some, you lose some...

He had to wait until his friend Gabe got back from Utah before we could do the REAL partying. This year he opted for a smaller party at a fun place: Dave & Busters. Even on half-price night it was still $$$! But he was thrilled and has already asked to go back next year.
Catherine, Seth, Gabe & Jack.
Everything about this is terrifyingly accurate.

Can't believe he's eleven already!

Three Months

Three months old, defined in one picture.

I think we're starting to see the light at the end of the newborn tunnel! I love knowing that from here on out things will be getting easier overall as far as sleeping and fussing. Plus your smiles, coos and occasional laughs sure do a lot to help me forget the terrible 45 minute naps you take.

Here's what you're up to at 3 months old:

-According to our very scientific method of weighing ourselves while holding you, you're currently about 17.5 lbs. That's 97th percentile. However, you are starting to nurse a little bit less, so maybe you've hit critical mass?

-I don't actually know what size clothes you're in because you so rarely wear any. Maryland summers are no fun for anyone. Might as well let the baby wear nothing but a diaper as often as we possibly can!

-Size 3 diapers, for sure. You've also stopped the "spend 2-3 hours pooping every morning" phase, for which I'm grateful. Instead, you opt to not poop for a day or two and then let it all out at once. All over me, generally.

-You are the world champion baby nighttime sleeper! You'll go down sometime between 9-10 pm, then sleep ALL NIGHT until around 6-7 am. Beautiful.

-There have even been a few nights you've gone down closer to 8:30 pm. I am so excited to get some time in the evenings again!

-Sleep at night involves an arms-only swaddle (too hot for a regular swaddle) and a motionless swing next to my bed. Sleep during the day is either in my arms, in your car seat, or swaddled and in your swing. You're in prime SIDS territory right now, so I'm too paranoid to let you keep sleeping on your belly. I have tried putting you on your back in the swaddle. Generally it's an epic failure. Not looking forward to breaking you from the swaddle habit AND the swing habit...

-You still hate tummy time and will not roll any directions. But you hold your head up like a champ.

-Between the drooling and the spitting up I'm doing laundry three times a week. I should probably just buy more burp cloths. And clothes for me.

-You gnaw on your fists like a starving wild animal. Possibly you're teething? There's a little lump on your gum that could be a tooth coming through, but it seems a little early and not quite like what I remember.

-You're starting to try really hard to grab things. You love getting your burp cloth or blanket near your mouth so you can gnaw on it.

-You protest every time I put you in your carrier, but you also pass out within 10 minutes of me wearing it. How you can sleep with your face pressed up against the strap I'll never know, but it's the only position you'll sleep in!

-You are a terrible car seat sleeper. You'll only stay asleep as long as the car is moving. Red light? Awake. Traffic slows to creep? Awake.

-We're fully in the 45 minute nap phase. Thankfully I've done this enough times that I've just accepted my fate. One day you'll take decent naps again!

-You will not take a pacifier unless you're really, really desperate. Maybe a handful of times, ever. Which is probably why you nurse every 45- 60 minutes during the day.

I still can't believe we lucked out having such an easy baby. There was one rough night where you were up every two hours fussing (overtired, I think). I was exhausted the next day, but also grateful for the reminder that I could be doing this every night (like I did with your siblings). Basically, keep sleeping like this at night and you will be my favorite child and inherit all my tons of monies.

Fat face!! Love!!

Beach Finale

Due to aforementioned baby, I didn't take more than a handful of pictures the entire trip. Thank you, Claudia, for being the family photographer this time!

Jon holding The Chub so I can enjoy the water

Seth & Jocelyn spent quite a bit of time boogie boarding

Uncle Timmy gets zero breaks from Elise duty.
Ever.

Eowyn and Aaron. Still my favorite.

Beach hair Catherine

And when he's not on Elise duty...it's Aaron duty.
Timmy is just so loved.

After a crazy morning cleaning and throwing out SO MUCH FOOD, we loaded up and headed back home. Have I mentioned how much Elijah likes being in his car seat?
If Timmy never has children, we can blame the hours of listening to Elijah scream during the drive (both ways). Scream for 45 minutes until he falls asleep, then sleep for 45 minutes. Repeat FOR ETERNITY.

Even with the baby and the screaming, we loved getting to be with family. Our only regret was that the separate houses kept us from hanging out all together at night. Next time: one giant house! Thank you again, Mom & Dad!

July 4th at the Beach

One of the houses we rented this summer came with a pool membership. It was right off the beach, which was kind of fun. The kids LOVED it! Dad Blood commented that maybe we should just find a place with a pool next time instead of a beach since that's all that most of the kids wanted to do. It would be a lot cheaper!

Look! I did make it into the water!

When it's crazy hot outside, you go get ice cream.

Fat babies aren't old enough for ice cream, sadly.

All the ice-cream eating cousins in their patriotic clothes (Mary's kids didn't come).

What would we do at the beach without Aunt Ashley? She is simply the best. She knows all the best tricks to catching clams and beach crabs. Catherine was her dedicated pupil. She spent hours scavenging the shore for little creatures and met with great success! I'm eternally grateful to Ashley for making sure Catherine got down to the beach when I was stuck inside nursing Elijah.

Rebekah and Catherine both loved following Aunt Ashley around and learning her ways.
They spent a lot of time together, which made me so happy.
They're very similar independent, creative souls.

Can Uncle Stephen survive the pile of nieces and nephews?!

Big fireworks are not allowed on the island, but we enjoyed watching the neighbors lighting off their fireworks in the street. Hopefully they didn't mind the extra audience they attracted!

By the time dinner was over and we were ready to do fireworks, it was dumping rain. I don't mind rain at the beach, but the lightning kept us home. We lit the sparklers under the houses and called it good:

Grandma provided glowsticks for those not interested in sparklers:

Or for those who are adorable and get sparklers AND glowsticks:

It was kind of disappointing to miss out on a big fireworks show, but with the rain and the anti-fireworks laws, we didn't expect anything. But once the kids were in bed, some of the neighbors pulled out the definitely-not-legal fireworks! I enjoyed the show from the deck of the house. Thankfully the kids slept through it--it was LOUD!
Happy Fourth!

Bloods at the Beach

Thanks to the generosity of Mom & Dad Blood, it was off to Holden Beach for the Blood clan again! This time we had everyone minus Elizabeth (who had just had a baby) and James. We still needed 3 houses to fit everyone! Thankfully one had a giant kitchen area perfect for serving the masses meals.

Rebekah buries Seth

Yes, that is Seth under the hat.
Rebekah was quite thorough.

Aaron was a full on beach lover this year.
He was also the only one who actually kept his hat on the whole time.

The shade dwellers

Elise & Tauriel

Giant beach baby.

Having a baby at the beach was not the most fun for me. It's hard to nurse if you're in a sandy, salty swimming suit. Plus it was just really hot & humid. Thankfully we figured out that soaking his blanket in water and wrapping him in it helped him stay cool. But we still spent a lot of time at the beach house nursing and napping instead of playing in the water. Not unexpected, but still kind of lame. Thankfully the kids (and Jon, mostly) had a great time and still made it to the water every day thanks to kind aunts & uncles.

Mom Blood wanted a picture of everyone at the beach. Thankfully Claudia brought her nice camera and a tripod, so we were able to get one. Not as nice as our professional ones from a few years ago, but much easier and cheaper!

Mom wanted a picture with EVERYONE in it, so she had me add in James & Samantha and Elizabeth's family. It's not amazing, but it appeased Mom.

And the standard crazy version:

Fat beach baby was not a fan of the waves:

Seth spent most of his time building things in the sand, as usual.

Andrew and Benjamin were his constant sidekicks, which was awesome.
He also made friends with another boy there visiting.
Seth has no trouble finding friends wherever he goes:

Aaron was also a sand-dweller most of the time:

Elise loved the water and was always demanding that someone take her to the waves:

Seth was allowed to use his laptop for a little while in the afternoons.
He was quite popular with all the cousins during this time:

We mostly forced the kids to eat outside for cleaning purposes.
They didn't seem to mind:

Elijah is almost as big as Brianna:

Possibly my favorite picture from the beach:
I love that Aaron has Eowyn to be his buddy!

Brief Sketches

When you open the dryer and find this inside, there's only one explanation:
Elise.

Catherine is my little naturalist. She's always outside investigating the plants and bugs. Somehow she discovered a tree with berries on it. She collected the berries and used them to make "Dyeberry juice." She actually painted several pictures with her homemade dye! And stained a few outfits...

If you're a REAL lady, all you need are some heels to feel dressed up.

Seth has started blogging and wanted a profile picture.
I couldn't have taken a more 'Seth' picture if I tried...

I tried putting gel in Aaron's hair one Sunday.
I need to just give up and accept that his hair cannot be restrained.

I snapped this picture of the girls through the front window.
Emma is moving away soon and we're going to miss these moments with good friends.

Super Spider-Elise to the rescue!

In case you were wondering...Catherine still loves bugs.

Elise snuck into the room and ducked suspiciously behind the end of the bed.
I caught her in the attempt.
"Elise, you don't need any makeup on!"
"Yes my do! I want it all the time!"
