September Fun

Fall means soccer for Seth. This year he's on a team with Gabe (again), as well as his friend Jack and a couple kids from his class. He's still working on developing his skills, but this year he's much more inclined to watch the ball instead of the butterflies on the field.

His favorite position is goalie, and he does a decent job.
His coach seems to mostly put him on defense, though.
He doesn't love soccer, but he likes it. That's good enough, right?

We also enjoyed some delicious cookies thanks to cousin Wuss-uhl:
Wish we could have been there to party with you, Russell!

And then this, which started with a tiny little black bug:
I saw them first in the townhome and didn't think much of it. Tiny little things that looked like beetles. Just one, by itself, every couple of weeks. Then I saw them when we moved. I kept meaning to research and never got around to doing it.

And then I did. Lucky us: weevils. We had no idea what we were dealing with, but we knew we needed to clear out everything in the pantry and get things in air-tight containers. Very expensive and a huge pain. We had no idea what the weevils had already gotten into and what they would be interested in getting into.

After several hours, we discovered the bag of brown rice. I won't even describe it, but it was horrifying. At least we had found the source! Many things went to the garbage, many other things went in the freezer (a week in the freezer will kill all weevils and eggs). We were lucky that they ended up being rice weevils, as we kept hardly any rice in the pantry. Grain weevils would have been a disaster.

Now we are smarter and poorer. And all our rice and whole grains will be making a week-long stop in the freezer before ending up in the pantry.

It's a...

Official results confirmed that we will be having a very wiggly baby girl this February! I'm feeling almost entirely better, minus an occasional return of morning sickness and general pregnancy tiredness/discomfort. Now all we need is a name...

Aaron at Two

Oh, my Aaron. You are my baby best friend. We do (almost) everything together, and you would be happy if we could do EVERYTHING together. Preferably with you sitting on my lap, eating my food. You love your Mommy, your Daddy, and your siblings. Taking naps and going to bed are the worst because you have to leave all the fun. You also hate letting Seth get on the bus or dropping Catherine off at preschool. I think it's partially because you miss them and partially because you think you're missing out on something.

You are a very particular child. You want your shoes on all the time. You don't like your belly uncovered or your sleeves rolled up. You don't like having dirty hands, even if it's because you're in the middle of eating. You must have the appropriate blankies and cars in your crib before you'll sleep, plus you require that all family members currently at home come and bid you good night.

You are also a sweet and affectionate boy. Your face lights up whenever one of us walks in the door after being away. When Catherine gets hurt or offended, you bring her blankets to make her feel better. And your snuggles are the best, even if they only last a few seconds before you return to dinosaur mode.

Over the past few months I've watched you transition from baby to toddler. In many ways you're still very young, and I don't mind. I'm not pushing for you to grow up faster. You'll do it in your own way and time. Until then, your brother and sister celebrate every new word and trick. You are so loved.

Happy birthday, my dinosaur.

Here's what you're up to at age two:
Happy boy with some cars

*the car stage has hit and hit hard. I swear overnight you went from having a casual interest in cars to being completely obsessed. The main benefit of this has been an easier nursery transition--you now are pretty happy to be dropped off and play with the cars.

*you LOVE reading books. Favorites include anything with cars (especially My Truck is Stuck), as well as Hush Little Baby, and Baby Beluga. You often carry around a book with pictures of various trucks and insist on us reading it to you. Repeatedly.

*you're still a champion eater, especially if it's my food or Daddy's food. You'll often reject what's on your plate in order to eat mine, even if it's exactly the same thing.

*size 4 diapers, somewhere between 18 month and 2T clothes.

*you love the song about the monkeys and Mr. Alligator and will "SNAP" along with the words. You especially love singing it with Catherine.
"There was a little boy, who had a little curl, right in the middle of his forehead."

*you are slightly obsessed with playing "cars" on the iPad (an app that lets you design and drive simple cars). You don't enjoy fighting your siblings for the iPad.

*you also love playing "choo choo" with the wooden trains and tracks. It's one of the few things you'll do independently, so I love it, too.

*you refuse to go down the stairs on your belly. You will only walk like an adult, even if it takes 6 times as long and is a lot more dangerous. You also get upset if I get more than two steps in front of or behind you.

*outside is still your favorite place. You love walking Seth to the bus stop and will often try to send him to the bus on weekends just so you can go outside. "Bus! Bus!"

*Catherine is your best friend. You still can't say her name. You went through a phase where you called her "sister", then another where you called her "that". Now she is "Princess" and you ask for her immediately after waking up. If I'm not careful, you'll sneak into her room and wake her up.

*you can't say your own name, either. But if I ask you where Aaron is, you touch your face or cheek. You've also got most of your body parts down, although some of the rhyming ones (toes/nose, knee/belly) will trick you up occasionally.
"I can't say my own name!"

*you like to answer most questions with, "no". You especially hate having your diaper changed or getting dressed. Anything that involved restraint. And those changing tables at church or stores...you scream bloody murder and act like you're going to die. Apparently you feel very, very unsafe up there.

*all animals are "uffs" (woofs). You love to watch them, but get a little nervous when they get too close.

*you are almost as obsessed with Elsa and Anna as your sister. Shopping with you is very traumatic as you throw a fit every time we pass Frozen paraphernalia or anything that resembles a car. Also, the lights on the trees in the Christmas department.

*you constantly ask to see "Wuss-uhl" (cousin Russell). You'll also ask to go see "Ball", "Anna" and "Baby" (Paul, Anna, and Luke Knox). I'm not sure if you actually like seeing Paul, or just like all his trains.

This picture is a perfect example of you: on my lap, with a car, demanding that I pay attention to nothing but you. Life is going to be a little rough when baby sister shows up in February!

Aaron Turns Two!

I first need to apologize to Aaron for the lamest birthday ever. The poor boy spent his entire birthday in the car. First, he got to take me to Urgent Care for a nasty cough/sinus infection. Then he took his sister to preschool. Then he had to go shopping. Picked sister up from preschool. Got woken up early from his nap to drive an hour to pick up Jon's new-to-us car (the Escort finally died, just a week after we'd paid $450 for a new exhaust system). Then the hour drive back home.

Luckily Aaron seemed content to drive his toy cars on the (nasty) dealership floor.
I promised him we would pretend that Friday was his birthday and would make it all up to him.

We were true to our word.
Friday we spent hours baking and decorating two delicious cakes just for Aaron.

Fine.
We grabbed two cakes on sale for $4 each at Walmart. Sorry, Aaron.

But we did put our hearts into decorating them for you:
Catherine was so, so excited for your birthday.
She may not always show it, but she loves you very much.

Your two cakes, complete with a car on each:
You spent all evening whining because you wanted to take off the cars and play with them.

Mom's cake (candles from Seth)

Catherine's cake.
Sadly, Daddy wouldn't let her light the candles for you.

You weren't super sure about this birthday thing.
Nor were you sure I would let you take that truck off the cake.

Fire is pretty cool. Singing is kind of weird.

We had your Knox and Olivera "cousins" there to celebrate with you.

Truck cake is delicious:

Birthday boy and Daddy waiting to open gifts:

So many siblings and "cousins" helping you with your gifts.
You are so lucky:

Aaron was quite pleased with all his gifts, which mostly consisted of cars and Dum-Dum suckers (his two favorite things). He also very much enjoyed his birthday cards, especially the ones with cars and dogs (known as "uhffs") on them. Thank you to everyone who loves and spoils our little man!

Catherine Goes to Preschool

After some debate, we decided to put Catherine in a "real" preschool instead of a co-op. This was partially due to her desire to go to school next fall (kindergarten here is full-day, so she needs some practice being away from home and in a classroom) and partially due to baby #4 limiting my ability to help in a co-op after February.

We did some searching and a lot of complaining about cost. I missed the option to sign her up at one of the local high school programs (which are only about $100 for the entire year), and most of my other options were in the $2,000 range.

Thanks to a tip from a friend, we finally found a preschool that not only fit the bill but also fit my belief that preschool should be about exploration and play, not learning how to read or do basic addition. I don't enjoy the driving we get to do three days a week (20 minutes there and back), but she loves it and has made great progress in her independence.
Catherine on her first full day of preschool.
Please note the Elsa shoes and the Rapunzel hair.

So excited to go to school like Seth.

This has been a perfect fit for her. Catherine tends to be defiant when faced with adults who demand things of her. But if you are willing to wait for her to be ready, she will soon be asking you to help her write names and practice reading letters and numbers. Her teacher has been wonderful in this regard. I can't believe she'll be heading to school all day next year. She is SO excited, but I feel like I'm already starting to miss her.

Life With Seth

Apparently when told to get in the shower, Seth sheds all his clothes on the way up the stairs and then streaks across the upstairs hallway (quite visible from the street due to a large window in our two-story entry). Waiting to strip in the bathroom is just not an option.

Seth has also developed a voracious appetite for books. He plowed his way through our collection of Great Illustrated Classics in just a week or two. Magic Tree House is a new favorite, but he can read an entire book in less than an hour. We will be visiting the library quite frequently.

Public school and I are still not comfortable with each other. It's a strange combination of holding Seth back from his potential (he's working on doubles addition when he's been doing multiplication at home for months) and forcing him to do things he's not capable of yet (SO MUCH WRITING, so hard for little boys still developing fine motor skills. And they think they'll be teaching cursive this year, bless their hearts). Also, one 20 minute recess at 2:40 pm. He's sitting at a desk or lunch table from 9 am to 2:40 pm, with a few classroom changes to break up the day. Not cool.

But, besides a new shirt-chewing habit which we assume is coming from an inability to move all day, Seth LOVES school. I keep offering to let him come home, but he says, "Not yet" (although more time for playing Legos and iPad is a huge lure). He is excelling in everything except writing (the physical part--his spelling is great) and apparently keeping organized. Which is a huge shocker considering his father has never been great at keeping organized. So as long as he's happy and learning enough (we'll just keep doing multiplication at home), we'll stay where we are.

I have enjoyed the extra time to focus on Catherine. She tended to get lost between her needy little brother and her homeschooled older brother. We've spent a lot more time reading and cooking together. If nothing else, I'm grateful for this time with her before baby #4 arrives and life gets crazy again.

Last Days

After two weeks of crazy cousin time, it was time for everyone to head home. We snuck in a few more adventures, such as feeding the wild Wuss-uhl:

And a quick trip to the (not really) beach:
(This was the only time Aaron & I got in the water. He is not a fan.)

Catherine & Adleigh, on the other hand, were little fishes in their floaties:

I hope my sisters survived the trip. There were a lot a missed naps, a lot of screaming in the car, a lot of way-too-early mornings. Being a single mom is hard, even on vacation. But there were also a lot of adventures, delicious food, and great memories. Can't wait to have you all here again at Christmas! We can make the dads babysit while we enjoy a REAL vacation!

Four Sisters

My mom's departing wish (as in leaving Maryland, not dying) was that we get a picture of all four sisters together. Since my husband was being...less than cooperative after church, I had to finangle the self timer on top of our tiny plastic slide. And all good photographers take a few test shots to get the settings correct.
Shot #1: We sacrificed this baby for you, Mom!

Shot #2: Kenna regrets offering her firstborn son as a sacrifice:

Shot #3: Well, maybe it was worth it after all:

Shot #4: Photobombed by neighbor girls:

Shot #5: Out-of-order sisters:
Hope this appeases you, Mom! Even if I look all pregnant and chubby.
(Why am I always the pregnant one?)

Starting the Goodbyes

As I knew it would, our time together went by too quickly. Way before we were ready, it was time to tell Grandma goodbye. We decided to give her a send-off Maryland style: with some Broom's Bloom crab soup!

Of course, we made the mistake of going on a Saturday at lunch time when the sunflowers were in bloom. 30-40 minute wait time? Not fun. Also, it was hot.
Catherine & Seth enjoy some shade.
Actually, maybe Seth isn't really enjoying it. He looks pained.

Catherine is a camera hog and Russell looks like a dweeb.

We love soup! Even when it's too hot for soup!

Seth roams through the sunflowers, in desperate need of a haircut.

Catherine lets her Rapunzel hair flow in the wind.
All the time.
Disney needs to dedicate more time to all the tangles Rapunzel gets in her hair.

The good news is that the entire Mikesell clan will be here for Christmas, so it's only goodbye for a few months!

Cousin Time!

I have some fantastic memories of growing up near my cousins. We played in Garth's treehouse, put on ridiculous plays for our parents, and spent a lot of time running wild. It makes me sad to realize my kids are lacking in cousin time--their closest cousins are almost six hours (and $50 in tolls) away. Which is why we take pictures like these--they may not remember, but I want them to know that they did get to hang out with their cousins and it was AWESOME! Please note that Seth and Catherine got left out of all these pictures because they are just too darn big to be lounging around in diapers.
The diaper brigade: Adleigh, Aaron, Russell & Breydon

"I'm too sexy for my pants..."

Aaron loves his Bubba.
Especially when she has food.

Not pictured: our evenings of playing games together.
Pretend this is us playing a game, not making a grocery list.

What? Grandma bought the boys matching outfits?

Yes, this was the best we could get.

Attack Russell takes out Aaron...

...before moving on to smaller victims like Breydon.

One day Breydon will be twice Russell's size and seek revenge.

Shady Maple

I wanted to take everyone up to Amish country while they were here. And Amish country always means a visit to the Shady Maple Smorgasbord and Grocery. It's worth the drive just for the bulk spices and hard-to-find candy (candy Legos!).

The Smorgasbord is delicious, and wonderful, and all-you-can-eat. But not much fun with little people. Next time we will be going on an adults only trip.
This one (who normally loves food, all food, all the time, refused to eat because his high chair had wheels and he HAD to drive it. And of course we were seated right by the entry...)

Jon's polygamous marriages have left him with many mouths to feed.
#sisterwives

Our new discovery this time: doughnuts!
Yum!

Kilgore

We celebrated Seth's return to school by enjoying a day at the waterfall (sorry, Seth!). We weren't the only ones--there was definitely a group of homeschoolers celebrating Not Back to School Day there as well. I was a tiny bit jealous.
Aaron was SO HAPPY that Aunt Bubba came back to play with him.
He adores her.

This princess loves the water.

Whoever invented these is getting millions.

The dirt and water brigade.

Catherine insisted I take her to the top of the falls.
Also, I need to buy a zoom lens.

Aaron & his Bubba

The Kilgore crew (minus Mom, taking the picture).
Pregnancy cheeks already? Darn.
