Bits of October

Watching 'Wolf Children' with Uncle Timmy.
Uncle Timmy has the best movies.
(Kenna, Adleigh needs to check out this one).

Two kittens at Emma's birthday party

Pulling out Halloween costumes means a visit from Zombie Aaron...

...and Zombie Elise:

Someone is still thinking about potty training...sometimes.
Mostly I think she enjoys being naked:
(Yes, those are my ponytails around her thigh...)

And...announcing Baby #5, who will appearing sometime in April!

We are so excited that this little one is finally here. It took us seven months and a couple of miscarriages to get here, so I was starting to wonder if maybe four kids is all we would get. I had just committed myself to going in to talk with my doctor when this little one decided to stick around!

I'm glad to be past the morning sickness and the sheer exhaustion of the first trimester. I was able to have an ultrasound at 14 weeks and was so glad to see a healthy little baby growing right on schedule! The tech gave us an 80% chance of having another little boy, which is just what we were hoping for. Elise is about all the little girl we can handle right now!

More Adventures

In what has become our family theme for this fall, we all (meaning me and four kids) got to visit Urgent Care for strep throat.
The little two

Not quite so little one

Definitely not little one

Turns out 3 of 4 kids had strep and the blessed doctor just gave all four kids antibiotics. After strep, we got fevers, rashes, colds, you name it. The best part is that they liked to space it out so that one kid would have to miss church and/or co-op every week. My poor piano students basically lost a month of lessons...sigh...

But one weekend we managed to stay healthy enough to make it back to Dutch Wonderland! The first time we visited they gave us complimentary tickets to return since many rides were closed (we didn't notice that many). Since they needed to be used before 2018 ended and since the park started having reduced hours in October, we headed back at the end of September.

Of course, as we were handing over our tickets I realized the date was actually for 2019, which means we could have saved them for next summer when our kids would be begging to return...oops.

We also learned that our original plan of going on a weekday right before Labor Day was a good one. Once school starts it's only open on weekends and it was quite busy. No running from empty line to empty line like last time! But the kids still had fun:
Aaron's new favorite ride: The Frog Jumper

I felt totally safe with these two at the wheel of the monster truck.

I did get to finally ride the cool rollercoaster with Seth, who now loves it. Not sure the 30 second ride was worth the 30 minute wait, but Seth was happy to have me with him. Now we'll see how long we can postpone another trip...

Back to (Home)School

Seth is the worst.
We took probably seven different shots and he ruined all of them...

Silly babies outside co-op

We were excited to start our second year at Cornerstone Co-op. It was nice to be back in familiar territory instead of being the new people!

This year Seth is in 5th grade, Catherine in 2nd, Aaron in K/Pre-K, and Elise is in the 2s class. I get to teach 4th/5th chemistry and middle school Spanish 1. We also get to clean up after co-op on Wednesdays, which is not our favorite thing. But it's good for my kids to have jobs they're depended on to do! Catherine is in charge of collecting the cleaning supplies and cleaning the glass doors. Seth vacuums the entry. I do garbage and Aaron & Elise watch Pocoyo or play outside with the sweet middle school girls who adore them.

Julia & Elise in their 2s class.
I ADORE their teacher--Ms. Jo is the ideal preschool teacher!

Sometimes co-op just wears a girl out!

Looking forward to another great year of school!

Random September

Exhausted Elise naps with Grandma Cathy

Selfies with Catherine

Grandma brought scorpion suckers for everyone!
To my astonishment, they all liked them...until they hit the scorpion.
Then they were quickly abandoned.

Catherine got to mooch off my Activity Days calling again.
This time we visited Bishop's friends who have a horse farm.
The girls were in absolute heaven.

Each girl got to ride on this horse.
The thing was a GIANT, but all the girls got on and stayed on.
Riding horses was one of their dream activities, so I'm glad it worked out!

Aaron at Five

A very typical Aaron drawing.
Math is your love language.

My Aaron Buddy,

You started counting down to your birthday about 3 months in advance. Every morning you'd ask Google, "How many days until September 16th?" Actually, it was usually several times a day. Thank goodness Google has infinite patience...

This year has had ups and downs for you. You went through phases where everything was going well and you were very content, but soon we'd find you being upset and frustrated by something none of us really could figure out. Probably something to do with communication or comprehension.

You got a new speech teacher this fall and she's amazing. She thinks you are doing great and is planning on re-testing you soon with the assumption that you will test out of services. Woo hoo!

You are still a charmer. You love people and are constantly asking when we are "going anyplace." London is still your buddy at co-op and you're happy to play with any of your church buddies. You don't really care who it is: you'll play happily with anyone.

I struggled this year deciding where to put you in school. You miss the cutoff for public school kindergarten by 16 days, but co-op gave me the option to put you in K anyway. I originally opted to keep you in Pre-K, but I soon realized that the group this year was much younger than it was when I taught last year (closer to age 3 than age 5). They were working on identifying letters and sounds, while you were starting to read. They were doing basic counting while you were exploring fractions and negative numbers (did I mention how much you love math?). In October we bumped you up to kindergarten. I'm still not sure it's right--you often tell me how boring it is (which is sad! K should be FUN!). But you still get to go to Pre-K on Wednesdays, so I think you're appeased.

First day of Kindergarten!

Your biggest irritation in life is Elise. You like order and rules and she is chaos personified. But as she gets older I'm seeing more and more moments of you two playing together. You love to hide and have Elise look for you. "Elise! Come find me!" She'll hunt you down, squeal with delight and then you'll do it again. And again. Hopefully you'll see more of that Elise and less of the Elise who takes your stuff and draws on your sacred notebooks just to see you freak out.

You really, really hate cleaning up and will often miss dessert because cleaning is "too hard and I need someone to help me." But when someone does help, you tend to just sit and watch them clean...

You spend a lot of time drawing. Looking through your notebooks is one of Dad's favorite activities. He'll often end up in tears as he examines your crazy, detailed scenes. Generally they're like some little boy version of a Bosch painting. "Is that a depressed cactus wearing a tie?" But you always know exactly what's going on and can explain everything, even if it makes no sense to me or Dad.

You are entering the little boy stage of gross jokes and silly humor. You love to make people laugh.

You are a perfectionist in many ways. You refuse to draw on any paper that is not completely pure (meaning you reject all the 'printed on one side' paper I've specifically put aside for drawing). You will also throw away any toilet paper that doesn't tear off perfectly from the roll. You like things a certain way and any deviation is cause for a meltdown.

You love to help me cook. Sometimes I dread the mess and the slower process, but your enthusiasm always makes it worth it in the end.

You are still my best friend. I love your snuggles and your constant questions. I love your cheesy grins and your squishy cheeks.  I love your completely unique mind and seeing how it tries to make sense of the world. Happy fifth, my best friend!

Aaron Turns Five

Aaron's birthday morning was bright and sunny.

So sunny, in fact, that he was apparently incapable of opening his eyes for any pictures.

For his birthday cake he requested dirt cake with worms and "strawberries and raspberries and blueberries and oranges and cookies and sprinkles." He got exactly what he wanted--minus the oranges.
Making the cake was half the fun! And 90% of the mess!

He was very deliberate in his placement of the fruit and sprinkles. I was quite shocked when his definition of "lots and lots of sprinkles" ended up being approximately 1 tablespoon's worth.

After much anticipation, it was time for the singing!

After he blew out the candles, he was officially FIVE YEARS OLD!

Welcome to big kid territory, little Aaron!

Philadelphia

Jon was a good sport and agreed to come with us on a day trip up to Philadelphia. We started our trip at the temple (free parking garage!) and then did a LOT of walking to see all the sights on our list. Lunch was (of course) at Reading Terminal Market. We knew how busy and tight the space would be from previous experience, but we've added a few kids since last time. Not sure it's something we'll try again with little ones!

After lunch it was another long walk to the historic district. Luckily Grandpa bought doughnuts for everyone to enjoy once we arrived:
(You can't tell, but Independence Hall was right behind us)

Our kids' attention spans aren't up for any of the really cool tours yet, so we stuck with things that were short and sweet, like seeing the Liberty Bell:

Our last stop ended up being the favorite: the United States Mint. I had heard cool things, but was skeptical because of said short attention spans. But besides Elise (who spent her time running away from us as quickly as possible), the kids were all fascinated. Glad we decided to give it a try!

Not Philadelphia-related, but the next day we all got to go watch one of Seth's soccer games. I didn't take any pictures of games this year, so I'm glad my parents were around to! He had another kind of rough season, with only a couple of wins. We decided this will be his last year of soccer. Hopefully something else will spark his interest eventually!

Grandpa, Grandma and the Aquarium

We were SO excited for Grandpa & Grandma to come visit us! Thanks to some work on the east coast, Dad arrived early and got to spend some quality time playing Starcraft with Seth:

Their visit perfectly coincided with Homeschool Days at the National Aquarium in Baltimore. We've never been before since it's crazy expensive, but it's cheap for Homeschool Days!
Waiting in the auditorium with Grandpa

Seth opted to sit WAY in the back with Grandma:

Guess they were having fun taking selfies together!
No question where those freckles came from originally!

The best part of the whole trip was watching the scuba divers feed the fish. They were very much putting on a show for the kids, making silly faces and gestures. My kids were enthralled:

Feeding clams to a puffer fish:

They also had a pool full of moon jellyfish that the kids could touch. Aaron was fascinated but refused to actually touch them:

Catherine went back repeatedly to touch them. I think we had to physically drag her away from the pool when it was time to go:

Group shot (minus Grandma) outside the aquarium:

Maybe it was a case of high expectations, but I was not super impressed. It was very dark inside, it was hard to figure out how to get from one level to the next (there were escalators that went up, but not down), and the shark alley and kids' touch sections just weren't that great. We definitely preferred Adventure Aquarium in NJ (and it's less than half the price of the National Aquarium!). But now we can check another Baltimore essential off our lists.

September Starts

These were taken in May, but I just found them on my phone.
Kaia, Elise and Sydney by the cherry tree at church.

Three beautiful girls

Playing with the green screen at the library

Elise is not sufficiently terrified of the shark attack

Playing with slime at Luke's house. Don't miss Seth (the blur) in the background.

Elise helping Daddy investigate the damage to the doorframe.

Catherine drew Elise a butterfly on the driveway...and then it rained.
She was very concerned and stood out in the rain watching it slowly wash away.
