Halloween, COVID style

We debated about it for a while, but in the end we decided to pass on trick or treating this year. There was also no ward party, so we had to find reasons to get dressed up. The local community college was doing a drive-thru trunk or treat, so we decided to give that a try!

Catherine's original plan was a skeleton, but then I introduced her to the Mexican Catrina.

Elise knew exactly what she wanted to be and refused to be dissuaded by her ridiculous siblings saying things like, "Aang is a boy! You should be Korra instead." Who wants to be Korra when you can be Avatar Aang?! And so, Aang she was:

Aaron, ever one to keep me on my toes, asked to be a Stick War Legacy SwordWrath. Since I have no idea what that is, I put Seth in charge of costume design. Not sure how much it actually looks like a SwordWrath, but it was kind of terrifying and Aaron was pleased:

Seth came up with his entire costume by himself. My only additions were the pocket full of pens and a calculator and the sweet, sweet 80s mustache I drew on with eyeliner. And yes, he did put up with a lot of comments from his uncles: "Tell Seth he can't dress up as himself for Halloween!" Luckily he found it all quite amusing. Being a nerd is something he's happy to claim!

I really didn't have any plans for Elijah this year. I figured we'd find some old Halloween shirt and call it good. But then Emma Knox sent me a picture of the cutest baby shark costume and I just knew that it was destiny. And so I present, Elijah the Baby Shark:

He was not interested in holding still, so this is the best shot I got of the fin:

We loaded up in the van, which was the point at which Elijah noticed Catherine's makeup:

She hid behind the book for the rest of the drive.

The trunk or treat ended up being a total flop. After sitting in traffic waiting to make a left turn for 40 minutes (there was no one there directing traffic, so the right turners just got to keep coming), we finally gave up. The kids were all quite disappointed. Thankfully our ward had scheduled a drive-thru trunk or treat for later that evening, so there was still something to look forward to. Seth was unhappy because it was specifically just for Primary kids. But his siblings shared and the Knoxes gave him his own bag of treats. We also gave them access to all the Halloween candy I had bought. In the end I think everyone was okay, even if it wasn't what we usually look forward to doing.
